Discover What Your Mouth Reveals About Your Sleep

Your oral health is closely connected to your overall health. Sometimes the signs show up in your mouth before you notice them anywhere else.

Sleep apnea is one example.

This common sleep disorder causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep. Many people don’t realize they have it.

Left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Your dentist may be one of the first providers to notice the warning signs.

Grinding your teeth. Clenching your jaw. Chronic dry mouth. Problems with the jaw joint. These can sometimes point to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

During a routine dental visit, your dentist may notice these patterns and recommend next steps. In some cases, special oral appliances* can help support treatment.

Dry mouth products, fluoride rinses and other preventive care may also help protect your teeth and gums.

Dentists, sleep doctors and primary care physicians often work together to diagnose and treat sleep apnea. If you think you may have symptoms, talk with your provider. Addressing sleep apnea can make a meaningful difference in your overall health.
