Did you know? Thunderstorms Trigger Asthma Attacks
A lot of us know about allergies triggering asthma. We may even know about other things like pets, pests and perfumes. But people with asthma may also have exacerbations from thunderstorms. In fact in Australia, there’s even a term – “Thunderstorm Asthma”. It’s due to the fact that when a thunderstorm’s rain strikes the ground, it breaks large pollen grains into smaller, more easily inhaled particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, causing severe asthma symptoms or even attacks in people with and without asthma.
Now, in the United States, this recent study shows the same. Over a five-year period ending December 2024, researchers analyzed ER data from Wichita, Kansas-area hospitals. During 38 thunderstorm days, average daily respiratory-related ER visits surged from 3 to 18.
