Fall 2024 Hospital Safety Grades Announced

54 Hospitals in Pennsylvania Earn an “A” on the Fall 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Leapfrog Reports Improvements Nationally in Healthcare-Associated Infections, Hand Hygiene, and Medication Safety

The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit representing hundreds of the nation’s most influential employers and purchasers of health care, announced the new fall 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. Driven in Pennsylvania by the Lehigh Valley Business Coalition on Healthcare (LVBCH), these grades provide a critical measure of patient safety for hospitals nationwide.

Hospitals earn an “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, or “F” Hospital Safety Grade reflecting how well they protect patients from preventable medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections. Overall, Pennsylvania has 41.2% “A” Hospitals and ranks as 9th in the country for percentage of “A” hospitals.

The fall 2024 Health Safety Grade shows hospitals nationwide are making strides in patient safety across several performance measures including improvements in healthcare-associated infections, hand hygiene and medication safety.

In Pennsylvania, 131 hospitals were graded, and 54 earned an “A,” 32 earned a “B,” 38 earned a “C,” 7 earned a “D,” and none earned an “F.”

LVBCH is your Regional Leader for The Leapfrog Group in Pennsylvania. “We would like to recognize our local hospital systems and their campuses that received an “A” grade,” said Carl Seitz, President, LVBCH.

  • Giesinger Health System’s Bloomsburg, Geisinger Medical Center, Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital, Lewistown, and Shamokin Area Community Hospital campuses
  • Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Hecktown Oaks and Pocono campuses
  • Luke’s University Health Network’s Allentown, Anderson, Bethlehem, Carbon, Easton, Miners, Monroe, Sacred Heart, and Upper Bucks campuses. All 10 of St. Luke’s campuses, including the Warren campus in New Jersey, earned an “A” safety grade.

“Preventable medical errors happen across the country far too often, including in our own community,” said Amanda Greene, Director of Operations, LVBCH and Leapfrog Regional Leader. “This round of the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade shows improvements in patient safety across the country, which is promising. The employers and purchasers in our coalition believe we all benefit from hospital transparency, and we can work together to continue to reduce preventable harm and advance patient safety.”

“The progress we’ve witnessed at hospitals in Pennsylvania is encouraging and worthy of applause. However, there is still much work to be done to continue making gains in patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We commend the hospitals in Pennsylvania that are clearly focusing on prioritizing patients and their safety – an effort that takes absolute dedication from hospital staff at all levels.”

The Leapfrog Group has a more than 10-year history of assigning letter grades to general hospitals throughout the U.S., based on a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.
